Computational Designer

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE FOCUS

(2+ years of Experience)

Are you a technically fluent designer passionate about using computational tools to shape resilient, human-centered landscapes? Hawkins Partners, Inc., a leading Nashville-based landscape architecture and urban design firm, seeks a Computational Designer who will help reimagine how we model, visualize, and build landscapes.

This is an opportunity to join an award-winning, collaborative team and pioneer the use of generative design, scripting, and data-rich modeling to tackle some of the most compelling public realm and urban design challenges in the Midwest and Southeast. Your work will directly influence how we design parks, plazas, streetscapes, and ecological systems that connect people to communities.

We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive team. We strongly encourage applications from candidates of all backgrounds, including those from interdisciplinary paths into computational design.

Job Summary

As a Computational Designer, you will contribute to complex urban and ecological design projects from concept through construction, while spearheading our evolving digital workflows. You'll develop generative tools, custom geometry scripts, and data-rich visualizations that expand the way we think, model, and build landscapes. This is an opportunity to deeply influence design culture in a firm committed to innovation and impact.

What You’ll Do

You will be a key contributor to complex design projects from concept through construction while shaping the firm’s digital design culture.

  • Be instrumental in developing computational workflows for site modeling, data analysis, and parametric design that improve efficiency and unlock new design possibilities.

  • Integrate digital platforms — Rhino, Grasshopper, Revit — with Civil 3D, GIS, and environmental datasets in close collaboration with our BIM Manager.

  • Translate data into design, turning ecological, infrastructural, and cultural complexity into expressive, buildable landscapes.

  • Prototype generative solutions and create compelling visualizations to communicate design intent and environmental performance.

  • Develop and maintain reusable scripts (Grasshopper, Python, Dynamo, C#) to streamline workflows and support the entire design team.

  • Collaborate across disciplines, working closely with landscape architects, urban designers, and external consultants to align computational design with creative goals.

  • Shape firm standards by contributing to the evolution of our computational design guidelines, tools, and culture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support design teams by developing computational workflows for site modeling, data analysis, and parametric design.

  • Manage geometry across Rhino, Grasshopper, and Revit platforms, integrating inputs from Civil 3D, GIS, and environmental datasets in coordination with office BIM Manager.

  • Translate complex site, ecological, and infrastructure data into expressive and buildable landscape forms.

  • Prototype generative solutions and visualization strategies to communicate design intent and environmental performance.

  • Collaborate closely with landscape architects, urban designers, and external consultants to align digital workflows with creative and technical goals.

  • Author and maintain reusable scripts (Python, C#, Dynamo, or GH plugins) to streamline cross-platform integration and improve design efficiency. The emphasis is on Grasshopper with proficiency in other languages a plus.

  • Contribute to the evolution of our firm’s digital design culture and computational standards.

What We’re Looking For

We welcome applicants who are curious, collaborative, and eager to push the boundaries of design technology.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture or a related design/architecture field.

  • 2+ years of professional experience with a focus on urban or ecological projects.

  • Proficiency in Rhino + Grasshopper and strong experience developing digital 3D landscape models.

  • Familiarity with Revit workflows and ability to produce compelling renderings (D5 or Enscape preferred).

  • Strong graphic communication skills (visual + verbal).

  • Willingness to learn emerging software and explore innovative applications.

  • Knowledge of construction detailing and ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficient in Revit for construction documentation.

  • Familiar with grading, planting design, and sustainable design practices.

  • Interest in community engagement and participatory design.

  • Experience scripting in Python, C#, or Dynamo to expand Grasshopper workflows.

  • Familiarity with working with LankKit, Large Language Models Prompting, AI Image Generation, CFD, Ladybug, Blender, Unity, Houdini; or Fabrication

Why You’ll Love Working Here

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience

  • Medical, dental, vision, and disability insurance

  • 401k plan

  • Continuing education support and professional development opportunities

  • Annual HPI City Visit (firm-wide learning trip)

  • Flexible hybrid work policy

  • A collaborative, design-driven studio where your ideas will be heard and implemented
